Working with Debbi Porter Interiors
Frequently asked questions
Anything not here, ask us on a call: (703) 555-0142.
Do you take on single rooms?
Yes. We design single rooms, a few rooms at a time and whole homes. A living room, a primary suite or a dining room is a great place to start.
Where do you work?
In person across Northern Virginia, Washington, DC and the Maryland suburbs, and at second homes on the Delaware beaches and the Maryland coast. We have also designed homes in New York City, the Midwest and as far south as Sanibel Island, Florida. Anywhere else in the U.S., we work through virtual design.
How does virtual design work?
We start with a video consultation and you send us photos, measurements and anything you have saved for inspiration. We send back a design plan: a floor plan, a color and fabric board and a shopping list with links. We review it together on a call and adjust until it is right.
What does an interior designer cost?
It depends on the size of the project and how much of it you want us to handle. We talk through the design fee and a realistic budget for furnishings early, during the exploration phase, so you know the full picture before any design work begins.
Do I need to buy furnishings through you?
For full-service projects, yes. Over more than 15 years we have built a network of vendors for quality, custom work and service, and handling the ordering, tracking and receiving ourselves is a big part of what keeps your project on time. Virtual design clients order on their own from the shopping list.
Can you work with the furniture and art I already own?
Yes, and we usually prefer it. Debbi came to interiors from fashion, and she thinks of a room the way she would think of a wardrobe: the pieces you love stay, and we build around them.
Do you manage construction?
No. For baths, smaller remodels and new builds, we make the selections and the drawings and work alongside your builder, architect or contractor. If you need trades, we can recommend painters, paperhangers, carpenters and window treatment workrooms we trust.
Do I need to be home during the project?
No. Many of our clients live in another home while the work is underway, especially on second homes. We agree on the schedule up front and send updates as things arrive and get installed.
How long does a project take?
It depends on the scope and how much is custom, since custom furniture and fabrics have lead times. We lay out the timeline during the exploration meeting and refine it as each phase moves along. If you have a date to hit, like a holiday or a move, tell us on our first call.
When should I call you?
As early as you can. Even if the work will not start for months, an early call helps you plan the budget and the order of things. On new builds, call before the selections are due, not after.
