Debbi Porter

Debbi spent more than 20 years as a fashion designer, living and working across Europe, Asia and North America and designing men's, women's and children's collections for labels in specialty and department stores. She designed the fabrics before she designed the clothes.

She earned a degree in Interior Architecture from the New York School of Interior Design and founded the studio in 2010. Every project still runs the way a fashion house would: we get to know you first, then build the room like an outfit, with the art and accessories as the jewelry.

A design board: denim blues, botanicals and brass hardware.

For clients outside the DC area. Video consultations, a full design plan and a shopping list you order from anywhere.

The dining room: stormy blue iridescent wallpaper and a crystal chandelier.

A design board: pinks, reds and embroidered florals.
Design boards

Color, fabric and texture

Every room starts as a board of real fabrics, finishes and color, the same way Debbi started every fashion season. You see how the velvet sits next to the linen, how the wallpaper reads beside the trim, before a single thing is ordered.

We love color, and we are happy to push a client a little further than they planned. The room still has to look like you.

Their daughter's room: floral wallpaper, pink bedding and a painted bed.
Process

How a project works

  1. 01

    Discovery call

A complimentary call by phone or Zoom. You tell us about the house, the rooms and how you live, and we decide together if we are a fit.

  2. 02

    Exploration

We meet, in your home or by video. We learn your style, the colors you are drawn to, what you collect and what you can't stand, and we set the scope, the investment and the timeline.

  3. 03

    Design

Floor plans, color palettes, fabrics, furniture, lighting, art and custom pieces like window treatments, presented together so you see the whole room before anything is ordered.

  4. 04

    Ordering and installation

We order, track, receive and inspect everything, schedule the painters, paperhangers and installers, then style the room down to the art and the last accessory.

Debbi immediately treated me like a partner.

From our first consultation, she read my aesthetic, then offered bold ideas that took my initial design to a new level. With her help, we've transformed my home into an elegant, comfortable, and functional space that is truly one-of-a-kind. I couldn't be happier!

Second homes

Beach houses and second homes

Many of our clients have a second or third home: a house at Rehoboth or Bethany, a condo at the Maryland shore, a place in Florida. We design them so they are ready to live in the day you arrive, and you don't need to be there while the work happens.

A condo we designed in Millsboro, Delaware was selected for a Parade of Homes event.

Debbi is a visionary.

We knew the style we wanted in our homes, and Debbi took our ideas and added to them, giving us a finished product that exceeded our expectations. Thanks to her work, our condo was selected to be in a Parade of Homes event and our house is now used by the builder to showcase the quality and potential beauty of their homes.

Fred M.Millsboro, DE
I absolutely love our new home!

Debbi helped me design our Florida home from start to finish, inside and out. She took my vision and put it all together with careful thought to each and every piece. She presented new, fresh ideas which completed the look I was going for. Debbi is also very precise in her measurements and her process, which was very much appreciated.

Questions

Do you take on single rooms?
Yes. We design single rooms, a few rooms at a time and whole homes. A living room, a primary suite or a dining room is a great place to start.
Where do you work?
In person across Northern Virginia, Washington, DC and the Maryland suburbs, and at second homes on the Delaware beaches and the Maryland coast. We have also designed homes in New York City, the Midwest and as far south as Sanibel Island, Florida. Anywhere else in the U.S., we work through virtual design.
How does virtual design work?
We start with a video consultation and you send us photos, measurements and anything you have saved for inspiration. We send back a design plan: a floor plan, a color and fabric board and a shopping list with links. We review it together on a call and adjust until it is right.
What does an interior designer cost?
It depends on the size of the project and how much of it you want us to handle. We talk through the design fee and a realistic budget for furnishings early, during the exploration phase, so you know the full picture before any design work begins.
Do I need to buy furnishings through you?
For full-service projects, yes. Over more than 15 years we have built a network of vendors for quality, custom work and service, and handling the ordering, tracking and receiving ourselves is a big part of what keeps your project on time. Virtual design clients order on their own from the shopping list.
Can you work with the furniture and art I already own?
Yes, and we usually prefer it. Debbi came to interiors from fashion, and she thinks of a room the way she would think of a wardrobe: the pieces you love stay, and we build around them.
